In 1963, five clean cut, talented, American college boys, signed up for a chance at the emerging and electrifying sixties rock and roll lottery. The impressive grand prize was international adulation and potential riches beyond any young musician’s wildest visions. But the wicked music business licked its’ lips, flicked its’ tail, and patiently waited. The wait would be brief. Impetuous, and naïve, the boys hastily signed away their very souls to become what every pimply faced kid within arms reach of a guitar wanted to be, rock and roll idols. From 1964 to 1969, intentionally using the patriotic stage name, “The Five Americans,” they managed to muscle their way around the British invasion with five consecutive chart topping singles. Egos soared and groupies gathered as they achieved the impossible. But the toll exacted by the “suit and tie predators” during the group’s meteoric rise and the drugs, alcohol, and death after their fall, were beyond anything they could have imagined. In short, the exhilarating road to renown would turn into a highway straight to hell. The fans of “The Five Americans” will be shocked as the book reveals a story that could only now be told. And when the last page is turned, the reader will see the real images behind the clean cut college boys who wrote and performed some of their favorite music of the 1960s. They will also know the depths of human desolation that “success” can bring and yet in the end, the reassuring triumph of the human spirit.
High Strung eBook Mike Rabon
I was very excited to find Mike Rabon,(Lead vocalist/Lead guitarist & song writer), had written a book about his band, The Five Americans. "Western Union" played on every radio station and was a massive hit! Although having been a fan of the band prior to this massive hit, I knew little about them.As a teenager, buying their albums, I was in awe of the 5 musicians on the LP covers. I aspired to be just like them! But what was hidden under the surface of these young men's smiling faces was a many sided story. Unfortunately so many talented young musicians were to be ripped off by unscrupulous managers, business men and record companies. Mike takes the reader into the intense struggle they had been placed into unknowingly. He took me back in time to his young dreams of playing in a band, then going out and actually making it a reality and the thrill of becoming a top band first in the big city, then the state, and ultimately the entire Nation! The big difference with the Five Americans from the countless other bands formed in the wake of the Beatles, was that Mike and 2 other members could write good original material that were hit records as well.
His story unfolds through the good times and bad times, the highs and lows. You feel like you are traveling with him through this time period along with those other smiling faces the nation loved. Mike Rabon is a man who never gives up and keeps on in his life through sometimes seemingly insurmountable odds. There is one twist after another, as well as moments that surprise and stun you.
And that is how his life's story becomes more than just the tale about a rock band and all its good and bad memories, but it touched my heart, as I feel it will touch many other readers, as a universal tale of Redemption, a "Gold Record" we can all attain, if we can go forward against the pitfalls of life as Mike has in his own. If John Lennon said, life is what happens when we are making other plans, Mike Rabon, either by choice or not, confronts each new obstacle head on, whether they were brought on by bad choices or just plain bad luck.
This book is fast and comfortable read that is well worth the cover price. Once you start it, you will not be able to put it down. I was also so pleased that he included comments about his band mates and the principle players in this story. Thanks, Mike for sharing your experience with us!

High Strung eBook Mike Rabon Reviews
Maybe it's because I first saw the Five Americans perform as a 16 year old at the Lou Ann's night club on Greenville Avenue. I still see 5 young men from Oklahoma--mere lads really--on stage that night wearing shiny pressed suits with Beatle haircuts and Beatle boots, holding shiny guitars with what seemed like enough equipment behind them to sink a small ship. The Five American logo stares at me from the face of the base drum at this very minute. From the first note of the first tune--Rabon's guitar riff from the Stone's The Last Time--I fell head over heels in love with live music. A love affair that will last until death do us part. A game changer so to speak.
Or maybe it's because I remember the time each member of the band piled into Ronnie Waldie's new Chevelle and listened to I See the Light on a new contraption called an 8 track player. Rabon and his bandmates were as amazed as my high school buddy and I when the first soaring notes of John Durrell's organ from I See The Light flooded the surrounding space.
Or maybe it's because like many young Dallasites of that period, I faithfully followed the band and remember the surge to stardom, then the struggle with KLIF radio and finally the subsequent heartache and slavery inflicted on the group by old man Abner and Abnak records.
Or maybe it's because I'd occasionally bump into Rabon on the streets of Dallas in the 70's--a fallen local hero trying desperately to reclaim his rock royalty status of the 60's. Or maybe it's because my youth passed before my eyes in technicolor the entire time I was reading Rabon's memoir.
Or maybe it's because Mike Rabon wrote one helluva book, opening up the window to his soul and allowing readers to look all the way inside. You feel what he feels--the elation from the unlikely meteoric rise to stardom. The devastation from the inevitable horrific crash landing, and finally the triumph of one man's commitment to family and spirituality. Rabon's story proves good will still give evil a good ass whipping every now and then.
But for whatever reason, I could not put the book down and High Strung deserves the ultimate praise any book could ever receive I started rationing the pages and was simply sad to see the book end.
And damn straight I'd love to hear The Five American play I See The Light on that tiny crowded stage on Greenville Avenue one last time.

Found the book very enjoyable with local color for Dallas and SE Oklahoma I'm not a writer but all you five American groupies will enjoy
exciting read love the truth of the story . how we can become victims of our own desires.Great Book
I was in High School when "Western Union" was released. I wore out the 45. I had no idea what went on behind the scenes. A real eye-opener.
Well I could never say it like "Mike Looney" did. I too lived in Dallas and knew a couple of the band members. It was so great for the Window opening to Mike's sole.
It was an eye opener for me as to what Abner did to them. Thank you so much Mike Rabon and Mike Looney. For saying it all.
"High Strung" tells a side of the story I never knew about "The Five Americans" that had five national hit records. The Dallas based group appeared on Ron Chapman's "Sump'n Else" television show and hung around our NorthPark WFAA-TV studio where I was the studio manager back in the 1960's. I never realized the tough road they had to travel in order to get their first club job in Dallas. Nor did I know about their dealings with an unscrupulous manager/record company owner and his "lack-of-talent-singer-son" when they started making records. The book deals with these things along with contracts, no royalties for the group, personal appearances, sex, drugs, groupies and the usual Rock 'n' Roll life style. The roller coaster ride is with the author and leader of the group, Mike Rabon, as he tells about surviving a life of glamor, fame, alcohol, drugs, and cancer. The book is a conversational, informal read that kept me guessing "what's next" until the very end.
